Hummus Amongus

I woke up dark & early this morning at 5:00 AM starving! I usually sleep later on days after long runs, and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep with a growling stomach. So I grudgingly got out of bed and made breakfast, part one: an open-faced almond butter & strawberry jam sandwich on spelt bread. I used the new Whole Foods 365 brand crunchy almond butter that I bought yesterday. It was only $6.95, which is probably still pricier than TJ’s, but totally worth the extra $1.00 because I did not have to waste half the day battling crowds in Union Square. I’ve been eating raw almond butter exclusively for a while and forgot how much I love regular (roasted) almond butter! The flavor is so different. I really can’t pick a favorite though; I just love all almond butter!

It seems I have a habit of eating part or most of my food before I get around to taking a picture of it. What can I say, I'm hungry! You try running 45-50 miles/week and walking a couple miles a day and see if you can wait to pose your food before inhaling it ;-)

I got up for real at 7:00, and wasn’t very hungry for another breakfast. I chopped up a mango, on sale for 5 for $5 at Whole Foods, and ate it with a banana.

I’m not sure what was going on with my state of mind this morning, but I was feeling rather euphoric (and no, I did not partake in any illegal drugs overnight…at least not that I can recall…). When Cirrus and I stepped outside into the fresh morning air for our daily walk, I felt a huge smile go across my face. Aaah, the sunshine, the cool morning breeze, my sweet little pup at my heels…life is good! The feeling continued as I walked to work listening to The Traveling Wilburies, hahaha. Happy music!

I’d really wanted a green smoothie for breakfast because I bought supa-dupa vegan protein powder to add to my swamp drinks. I’m hoping this will give them better staying power! But I wasn’t hungry enough, so I whipped one up for lunch. Into the blender went:

-1 c. coconut milk

-banana

-frozen mango

-frozen blueberries

-about ¾ of a packet of protein powder

-spinach

The protein looked a bit dark & grainy...I haven't had protein powder in YEARS so I was a bit scared! But also excited, since I feel like I need to up the protein due to my high mileage and my more demanding training plan for marathon #2.

After standing in front of the wall of protein supplements for a good five minutes, comparing labels and obnoxiously blocking the aisle, I selected the Proventive Harmonized Vegan Protein. It has a blend of five different proteins: Yellow Pea, Brown Rice, Hemp, Chia and Cranberry Proteins. I’m already a huge fan of hemp protein and hemp products, since hemp is the only plant that has a complete amino acid profile. And thanks to the book Born To Run (which I still haven’t read!), the whole world knows how great chia seeds are for endurance athletes!

In one packet, there is 130 calories and a whopping 25 grams of protein. That is more protein than I probably get in a day, fo’ shizzle. There are lots of amino acids, and the only other ingredients besides the protein sources listed above are natural vanilla flavor, guar gum and stevia!

I didn’t put the whole packet in since I didn’t know what it’d taste like! I used about ¾ of the packet and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. It has a mild vanilla flavor that really paired well with the fruity smoothie and the creamy coconut milk. It also made my smoothie so thick, I almost felt like I was eating ice cream! Just looking at the smoothie made me happy!

When I got to work, my co-workers were asking me about my weird-looking slush in a mason jar. It actually sparked a really cool conversation about protein powders and which types are best. I was shocked that they were talking to me about health-related stuff! I felt like maybe we were on the same wavelength after all...that is, until I mentioned how I love hemp protein. Note to self: Do not talk about loving something also known as a drug to co-workers. Mmm yeah. After the awkwardness passed, I ate the smoothie at 11:00 and it held me over for 2 hours. Then again, the day after a long run is not the best day to test out a food for its staying power. I’m always extra hungry on post-LR days. So I broke into my Clif Bar & apple

And then needed to go out and get another bar around 4:00. I had a Chocolate Peanut Odwalla Bar and a Coke Zero (unpictured). I really didn't want a bar at all, but I had no other options close to work. I need to bring real food to work!

By 5:30 I was starving again. That’s when I decided today would be a rest day! My legs actually feel great today, but I hate running when I’m hungry! I had originally planned to run 4 easy miles today after work and take tomorrow off, but I'd rather go for a morning run tomorrow.

I’ve been craving salt all day, which for me means HUMMUS! So after work I whipped up a salad with hummus & chickpeas and had a very veggie dinner. My salad had:

-baby romaine lettuce

-carrots

-tomato

-red pepper

-chickpeas

-3 T hummus

-balsamic vinegar

I also had a slice of spelt bread with a little more hummus. I feel like all I ate today was carbs. If I had to pick one macronutrient group to live off of exclusively, it would most definitely be carbs!

Aside from salt, I'm also craving WINE! But some cravings must wait til a day off from work to be indulged ;-) Actually my mom is quite the wine-o, so I plan on mooching some Pinot Grigio off of her once I get back to Vermont!

Dessert was cherries and two squares of Lake Champlain 75% dark chocolate . Shout out to my soon-to-be home state!

I feel like a lame-o because I have not yet done anything to put my lil' blog in the public eye. I feel like it's not good enough, but in honor of my live in the present challenge, I'm going to start spreading the word when I have some free time! There are a few blogs that I love and read often but haven't commented on yet because I didn't have a blog and didn't feel like I was part of the blog world. But I want to be! Hopefully this blog will take off soon :-)
